Last June, 2 developers from the SonarCloud team, Julien and Greg, attended the Atlassian Bitbucket Cloud development week in San Francisco. Their mission? To create the first version of the SonarCloud application for Bitbucket Cloud, enabling automatic detection of bugs and vulnerabilities in project branches and pull requests, in the product itself! With the support of the Atlassian Bitbucket Cloud team, they successfully completed this mission – let’s see the features in more detail!

Once the SonarCloud application is installed on your machine, setting up SonarCloud analytics in your repository pipeline is simple. First, generate a token from your SonarCloud account (under “Security”), then save it as an encrypted environment variable in your project or team, and finally update your repository’s bitbucket-pipelines.yml file to trigger analysis every time code is uploaded.

Thanks to tight integration with Bitbucket Pipelines, SonarCloud automatically detects which branch or pull request is being built and updates the corresponding project with code quality results.

To create a pipeline, first select a Bitbucket Cloud repository and then a YAML file in that repository. The repository in which the YAML file is present is called the self repository. By default, this is the repository that compiles the pipeline.

Later, you can configure the pipeline to query a different repository or multiple repositories. For information on how to do this, see Completing multiple repository checkout.

Azure Pipelines have access to repositories to capture code during builds. In addition, the user configuring the pipeline must have administrator access to Bitbucket, as that identity is used to register a webhook with Bitbucket.
