While Fabius was besieging Tarentum, an incident of little importance in itself helped him to achieve a great victory. Hannibal had provided the Tarentines with a garrison of Witches’ troops. The prefect in command of these was deeply in love with a woman who had a brother in Fabius’ army. She had written to her brother to tell him of the relationship that had arisen between her and a wealthy foreigner of high standing among his countrymen. The brother harbored the hope that, through his sister’s mediation, his lover might be persuaded to either extreme and communicated his thoughts to the consul. The idea did not seem at all unreasonable, so he was instructed to cross the lines and enter Tarentum as if he were a deserter. After being introduced to the prefect by his sister and establishing a friendly relationship with him, he cautiously groped his disposition without discovering his real objective. When he was satisfied as to the weakness of his character, he called his sister to his aid and by her persuasion and flattery succeeded in convincing the man to betray the position of which he was in command. When the time and manner in which the project was to be executed had been arranged, a soldier was sent by night, from the city, to pass through the guard posts and inform the consul of what had been executed and of the arrangements made.
