Imagine a garden, that’s your network. It’s made up of physicians and hospitals that agreed to lower their rates while meeting quality standards. The fence enclosing the garden separates what is in-network and what is out-of-network.
With an HMO, or health maintenance organization, plan, you select a primary care physician from your plan’s network who provides routine care and, if you need additional care, refers you to in-network specialists. With HMO plans, out-of-network care is not covered.
With a PPO, or preferred provider organization, you do not need a referral for additional care. You have more freedom to choose the doctors you want to see, but out-of-network doctors will cost you more.
A health maintenance organization (HMO) plan is one of the least expensive types of health insurance. It has low premiums and deductibles, and fixed copayments for doctor visits. In HMO plans, you must choose doctors within your network. When you enroll in the plan, you will choose a primary care physician (PCP), whom you will see for regular checkups. Your PCP should give you a referral to see a specialist, such as a dermatologist (skin doctor). Because all of your health care services go through your PCP, it is important that you find one you trust. HMO plans are a good choice if you are on a tight budget and do not have many medical problems.

From the beginning of the Revolutionary War until the founding of the city of Washington, it was the capital of the United States. It also has an interesting historic center, splendid parks, markets, a lively nightlife with a large young population (it is a prestigious university town, home of the oldest university in the country, founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin). And here is settled, as a contrast, a very special and somewhat eccentric minority (in our eyes): the Amish, a community of 16,000 inhabitants who live in the surrounding rural areas as they did in the seventeenth century, when they arrived in the country.
