Cases began to increase in December and quickly broke most pandemic records. Omicron has proven to be more contagious than previous variants, and the sheer volume of cases has overwhelmed hospitals and initially caused major delays at major testing centers.

But data from sites that were affected earlier by Omicron showed that the overall surge does not last as long as previous variants. That means the curve should resemble an icicle once it’s over: a rapid rise followed by an equally rapid decline.

The two-week moving average of new cases per day saw another significant decline, dropping from 2,645 on Wednesday to 2,475. This number has been steadily falling and is a good indication that cases are declining nationwide.

State and county health agencies often redistribute daily data after reporting to better reflect the date of death or symptom onset, so moving average trend lines often differ from daily reports and are considered better indicators of the direction of the outbreak.
