When considered with the lower Mississippi River, the Mississippi-Missouri system reaches 6275 km – the fourth longest river system in the world – and drains a watershed of 2,980,000 km² – the sixth largest in the world.

For centuries, the Missouri River formed one of these major migration routes. Most of the migratory groups that passed through the area eventually settled in the Ohio Valley and the Mississippi River Valley, but many, including the mound builders, remained along the Missouri, becoming the ancestors of later indigenous peoples of the Great Plains.

During the 20th century, the Missouri River basin was extensively developed for irrigation, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation. Fifteen dams confined the main channel of the river, and hundreds more on its tributaries. Meanders were cut and the river channelized to improve navigation, reducing its length by nearly 200 miles from pre-development times.

In pre-Columbian times, it was already an important waterway and the Amerindians called it “Meschacebé”[4] which means “father of the waters”. Today, it is a fundamental element of the American economy and culture.

On September 11, 1997, President Bill Clinton designated two sections of this river, the Upper and Lower Mississippi, as one of the fourteen rivers that make up the American Heritage River System.

Its headwaters are located at the north end of Lake Itasca (northern Minnesota),[5] at 450 m asl. The river soon reaches 210 meters after St. Anthony Falls near Minneapolis and is joined by the Illinois and Missouri rivers at St. Louis (Missouri) and the Ohio at Cairo (Illinois).

Consequently, the flow of the Mississippi is characterized by large variations depending on location and season; it generally ranges from 8000 m³/s to 50 000 m³/s.[14] At the mouth the average flow is 18 000 m³/s,[14][2][13] which is a lot for a river located in the temperate zone, and ranks sixth in the world for its flow. [15] But during the flood period, the flow can easily rise to 70,000 m³/s, even reaching 300,000 m³/s during the 1927 flood.[16] The Ohio River contributes more than half of the total flow of the Mississippi (8,000 m³/s).[2][13] Finally, its average annual flow, referring to the extent of its watershed, is 5.9 liters per second per square kilometer.[2] The Ohio River has an average flow rate of 5.9 liters per second per square kilometer.
